Canada's first First-Lady and her husband Prime Minister Sir John A. MacDonald travelled across Canada in 1886 on the newly-completed Canadian Pacific Railway. Although the couple were housed in a comfortable car on the train, Lady Agnes decided that she wanted a first-hand experience of Canada's mountain ranges from Banff to the West coast. This song is about her choice to ride on the cowcatcher and travel only by daylight hours so as not to miss anything.
This pair of video downloads supports the Music/Social Studies resource "Our Place Called Canada". Both videos feature lyrics displays for use on classroom media equipment. One video sound track includes the vocal lines, making it ideal for introducing the song or using it for a listening activity. The other sound track has only the instrumental accompaniment, giving the lead to student voices.
